Suriya’s “Retro” Set for Early Netflix Premiere on May 30—A Second Chance for the Gangster Drama

Suriya’s much-anticipated film “Retro,” directed by Karthik Subbaraj and co-starring Pooja Hegde, is primed for its digital debut on Netflix earlier than expected. After opening in theaters on May 1, 2025, to a mixed yet notable response, the romantic-action drama will begin streaming on Netflix from May 30, 2025—a day earlier than its initially scheduled May 31 OTT release. This move gives home audiences the opportunity to experience the film across a wide range of languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, ensuring pan-India accessibility.

“Retro” follows the journey of Paarivel “Paari” Kannan (Suriya), an orphan raised by gangster Tilak Raj (Joju George). Battling between loyalty to his underworld family and a yearning for a peaceful future with his love Rukmini (Pooja Hegde), Paari’s world is upended by betrayal, violence, and a struggle for redemption. Rich with atmospheric visuals, a propulsive score by Santhosh Narayanan, and high-octane action, the film combines elements of love, laughter, and war across its nearly three-hour runtime.

Despite robust buzz and Suriya’s top billing, “Retro” enjoyed only a modest theatrical run in regions outside Tamil Nadu, especially in Telugu-speaking areas. However, the digital release is expected to breathe new life into the film, inviting viewers who missed its theatrical window. With supporting performances from Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and a special appearance by Shriya Saran, “Retro” offers fans a layered narrative that balances emotional arcs with pulse-pounding action.

Netflix’s acquisition of the digital rights is seen as a boost for both the streaming giant and Suriya’s fanbase, who can now revisit—or newly discover—the gangster romance at their own pace. As anticipation mounts, all eyes are on how “Retro” fares in its home-streaming second innings
